Presidential Hackathon Promote International Collaboration to Accelerate Environmental Sustainability through Technology

In response to the pressing global issue of climate change, the Taiwanese government has committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. Aligning with this goal, the 2024 Presidential Hackathon adopted the theme "Digital and Green: Next-Generation Public Infrastructure," receiving a record 77 submissions from various countries. The surge reflects a worldwide effort to develop innovative digital solutions that leverage data and technological advancements to promote sustainable development and achieve net-zero carbon emissions.

After nearly two months of evaluation and professional guidance, two teams emerged as winners: GreenhopeBCTW, a collaboration between Taiwan and the United States, and MooApps from Indonesia. GreenhopeBCTW developed a blockchain-based personal carbon reduction wallet system to incentivize environmentally friendly behaviors by converting them into assets. MooApps created a digital livestock monitoring app that assists farmers in managing their farms through real-time data analysis.

On December 22, 2024, President Lai Ching-te presented awards to the winning teams. Director Raymond Greene of the American Institute in Taiwan and Representative Arif Sulistiyo of the Indonesian Economic and Trade Office to Taipei are among the distinguished international guests. They praised the hackathon's spirit of cross-border public-private collaboration and encouraged global citizens to utilize technology to create a better digital future.

To foster collaboration between Taiwanese and international innovation teams, the Presidential Hackathon invited international judges Hal Seki and Frans-Anton Vermast and outstanding teams to Taiwan for exchanges. They visited the National Taiwan University's Smart Dairy Monitoring System and the Bank of Taiwan's digital finance projects. The Presidential Hackathon also arranged bilateral meetings with top domestic competition teams to promote mutual learning and explore opportunities for international cooperation. Additionally, the Presidential Hackathon organized visits to the Linkou Startup Terrace to facilitate the implementation of excellent proposals. These activities aimed to help global teams understand Taiwan's resources for supporting startups, laying the groundwork for future development and international partnerships. The event seeks to accelerate the realization of a digitally-driven, net-zero future by promoting public-private collaboration and innovative technologies.
