Minister Tang meets with Seimas speaker, oversees signing of Taiwan-Lithuania digital resilience pact

Minister of Digital Affairs Audrey Tang met with Seimas speaker Viktorija Cmilyte-Nielsen and the Committee on Foreign Affairs before overseeing the signing of a Taiwan-Lithuania pact on digital upskilling and resilience Jan. 11 at the Ministry of Economy and Innovation in Vilnius.

Tang, who is visiting the EU member state Jan. 10 to 13 at the head of a delegation, addressed Cmilyte-Nielsen during a special meeting of the committee called by Chair Zygimantas Pavilionis and attended by a number of high-profile members such as Emanuelis Zingeris.

In an address, Tang described Taiwan and Lithuania as natural partners standing firm in the face of authoritarian expansionism. She urged both sides to deepen friendship and expand exchanges in mutually beneficial areas on the basis of shared values like freedom, democracy and respect for human rights and rule of law.

According to Tang, the fact she chose Lithuania as the destination for her first trip abroad since the launch of the Ministry of Digital Affairs in August 2022 symbolizes the strength of two-way ties. It also reflects a joint willingness to co-create in areas like cybersecurity, digital development, education, fintech and govtech, she said.In response, Cmilyte-Nielsen welcomed Tang and said she looked forward to more collaboration between Taiwan and Lithuania.
Following the meeting, Tang joined MOEI Minister Ausrine Armonaite at the headquarters of the ministry in overseeing the signing of a Taiwan-Lithuania letter of intent on digital upskilling and resilience.

Inked by Juang Ying-chih, director general of the moda’s Democracy Network, and Romualda Stragiene, director of the MOEI’s Innovation Agency, the pact paves the way for Taiwan and Lithuania to cooperate in nurturing digital industry talents while providing younger generations with the skills to navigate the internet safely and recognizing online harms.

Tang and Armonaite then took part in a news conference in which they fielded questions on the pact and announced the moda’s participation in a MOEI-led reconstruction project in Ukraine.

Other activities on Tang’s itinerary include meetings with the Seimas Economy Committee and Group for Inter-Parliamentary Relations with Taiwan, as well as attending the inaugural Free Digital Democracy Dialogue, or F3D, at Vilnius University’s Institute of International Relations and Political Science and participating in commemorative events for the Day of the Defenders of Freedom.
