2024 5G Millimeter Wave Trends and Innovative Applications International Forum: Analysis of 5G Innovative Applications, Future Trends, and Diffusion Strategies from Taiwan and Japan Perspectives

The development of 5G is accelerating. According to ABI Research, the compound annual growth rate of global 5G market is estimated to reach as high as 63% by 2026. The world has already entered the era of 5G commercialization, and 5G characteristics, such as large bandwidth, low latency, and wide connectivity, are widely applied in various fields and scenarios, where the application of millimeter-wave technology is a key aspect of development.
With the support and guidance of the Administration for Digital Industries (hereinafter referred to as ADI) of the Ministry of Digital Affairs (hereinafter referred to as moda), this year’s 5G Millimeter Wave Trends and Innovative Applications International Forum is jointly organized by the Institute for Information Industry and Japan’s Fifth Generation Mobile Communication Promotion Forum (hereinafter referred to as 5GMF) at Nangang Exhibition Hall 2 on March 21 2024.
This forum aimed to explore the technology advancements in 5G millimeter-wave, the commercial models of private 5G networks, and the market opportunities for 5G innovative applications. It invited Japanese communication application-related companies, including Japan's largest telecommunications operator NTT DOCOMO, Qualcomm, Murata Manufacturing Co., Sony, Central Japan Railway Company, and others to Taiwan. They joined Chunghwa Telecom, one of Taiwanese 5G communication service providers, Auray OTIC and Security Lab, the first OTIC lab in Asia, Qualcomm, and representatives from industries with practical implementations of private 5G networks, such as the Nangang Exhibition Hall, to exchange insights and experiences.
The forum also demonstrated some of ADI’s achievements in implementing private 5G network at Nangang Exhibition Hall 2. Through the private 5G network, the moderator located in Taitung attended the Taipei forum virtually, enabling real-time interaction and exchange with speakers from Taiwan and Japan. In additions, at the forum venue, through the connection of the private 5G network, robots located in the Smart City Summit & Expo at Kaohsiung Exhibition Hall enabled remote guests at the Taipei forum to view the exhibition from afar.
Deputy Minister Huai-jen Lee of moda stated that through the policy of the "5G dedicated frequency and private network innovative application project," the ministry has selected 13 industry associations to form the 5G Special Interest Group (5G SIG) of vertical industry applications. This task force covers various fields such as tourism, cultural performances, and consumer manufacturing, selecting 33 benchmark field sites. It integrates the resources of 5G network hardware and software equipment, application service solutions, and cybersecurity service providers from the upstream, midstream, and downstream sectors of the private 5G network industry. In total, over 160 companies have been involved in the implementation and operation of innovative private 5G network applications, accelerating the digital transformation across various industries.
To enhance the overall solutions of 5G vertical domain private networks, Taiwan will continue to leverage its advantages in international cooperation. Together with global partners, Taiwan aims to improve the completeness of products and solutions, construct a more robust technology industry chain, and move towards the international market.
It is hoped that through this forum and exchange, we can create international cooperation opportunities, attract global 5G solution providers, including those from Japan, to invest in Taiwan. We also aim to export Taiwan's complete solutions for private 5G networks, including mature innovative applications trialed in related vertical industry fields, network equipment, high-end servers, and semiconductor chips, to Europe, the U.S., Japan, and other countries while being based in Taiwan to serve the global market.
