Submarines Cables Damaged after Earthquake, MODA: Backup and Emergency Response Promptly Activated to Ensure Stable Communication for All
In response to a series of earthquakes that occurred recently, causing damage to some international submarine cables in the eastern waters of Taiwan, the Ministry of Digital Affairs (MODA) said today (29th) that it has immediately requested telecommunications operators to activate their response and traffic rerouting mechanisms. Currently, all non-fault sections are operating normally. Although there may be slight delays in some connections during peak hours, overall external communication remains stable. MODA urges the public to rest assured.
MODA pointed out that due to the earthquakes, some sections of international submarine cables, including SJC2, PLCN, FNAL, RNAL, and EAC2, located in the eastern waters of Taiwan, experienced disruptions. Upon receiving the report, MODA immediately verified that all telecommunications operators had completed the traffic rerouting operation. According to feedback from operators, alternative routing support has been implemented to ensure uninterrupted communication. For submarine cables such as EAC1, TSE-1, APG, TPE and APCN-2, the fault points are mostly located in the waters near Japan, China or Singapore. The operators have also coordinated with international submarine cable organizations to speed up the repair progress.
MODA further explained that, in order to ensure uninterrupted communication, it had prompt verified with the operators that traffic rerouting had been completed, and requested them to proactively coordinate the deployment of cable repair vessels. If sea conditions permit, the repair of relevant submarine cables are expected to complete in as early as January or February 2026.
MODA stressed that it will continue to enhance its overall response capabilities through three aspects: pre-event strengthened detection, in-event real-time response, and post-event accelerated repair. Adhering to the principle of redundancy upon redundancy, it will proactively deploy asynchronous satellite sites, subsidize the expansion of microwave capacity and install more submarine cables to enhance the resilience of Taiwan's submarine cable communications.
MODA urges the public not to be affected by rumors or false information online. For accurate information, please refer to the latest news on MODA's website: https://gov.tw/oXi .
