Communications in Dongyin Return to Normal After Repair of Taiwan-Matsu Subsea Cable No.2
The Ministry of Digital Affairs (MODA) received a notification from Chunghwa Telecom last night (25th) that repairs to the Taiwan-Matsu Subsea Cable No.2 (TDM2) were completed. The cable experienced complete disruption approximately 23.6 kilometers off Shalun, Tamsui, on March 7, 2026. Communication services in Dongyin have now been switched back to the subsea cable.
MODA pointed out that the TDM2 subsea cable had previously sustained partial core wire damage about 180 kilometers off Shalun on October 7, 2025. However, communications remain unaffected, as the remaining core wires provide sufficient capacity to meet peak-hour demand in Matsu. If sea conditions permit, repairs to the damaged core wires are expected to be completed as early as November 30, 2026.
MODA will continue to strengthen the resilience of the communication network in offshore islands based on the principles of “redundancy upon redundancy.” These measures include deploying non-geostationary satellite terminals at key government locations and subsidizing telecom providers to expand microwave transmission capacity and subsea cable construction. By implementing diverse and heterogeneous communication backups and response mechanisms, MODA aims to ensure government and public communication uninterrupted.
MODA stated that all information regarding subsea cable failures, maintenance, and repairs is available on its official website. The public is advised not to rely on online rumors or spread false information. For accurate information, please refer to the latest updates on MODA’s website: https://gov.tw/oXi.
